OnOff SHIM: power switch for Raspberry Pi

Although tiny, OnOff SHIM is a convenient power switch to add to your Raspberry Pi board.

These SHIMs (acronym of Shove Hardware in the Middle) are designed as a tiny, handy and affordable new range of boards. The bare board, without mounted components, is designed to be only 0.8mm thick. It can be soldered directly onto the Raspberry Pi’s GPIO pins, to be used along with HATs and pHATs on top.

How to use the OnOff Shim

You only have to plug your micro-USB power supply into the micro-B connector located on the OnOff SHIM. After that, it is enough to press the button only once to switch power on and boot up the Raspberry Pi board. Install the software (whose link you find below), and then press the button and hold it down for one second. This will lead to a tidy shutdown and utterly cut the Raspberry Pi’s power.

Software

A one-line-installer helps you to smoothly install the clean shutdown daemon. It controls the state of BCM pin 17 and, when you press the button, a clean shutdown is initiated. Immediately before your Raspberry Pi shuts down, the BCM of pin 4 is pulled low to totally cut the power to the Raspberry Pi.
