PMS5003 Particulate Matter Sensor with Cable

Thanks to this Plantower particulate matter (PM) sensor, you can accurately monitor air pollution. This small sensor is capable of detecting particles of various sizes (PM1, PM2.5, PM10) and different types of matter such as smoke, pollen, dust, organic particles, metal particles, and more.

When used together with Enviro Plus, this sensor allows you to build your own air quality monitoring station, also giving you the opportunity to contribute to citizen science. Simply connect the cable to the sensor and then to the connector located on the underside of the Enviro Plus, and you are ready to go!

A tiny fan draws air into the sensor. A built-in laser detects both the number (and therefore concentration) and the size of airborne particles passing through the sensor.

Software
The Python library for the PMS5003 sensor allows you to read PM1, PM2.5, and PM10 values both as standard and environmental units, as well as particle counts of different sizes: >0.3, >0.5, >1.0, >2.5, >5, and >10um.

If you decide to use this sensor with a Raspberry Pi board, you will need to make a few configuration changes. Type sudo raspi-config in the terminal, then disable shell login and enable the hardware serial port under “Interfacing options” and “Serial”. Edit your /boot/config.txt file and add the following lines at the end of the file: enable_uart=1 and dtoverlay=pi3-miniuart-bt .

The Enviro Plus installer script can perform this configuration for you.

Notes
Before using this sensor, remove the blue protective film covering the metal casing.
