Display HAT Mini for Raspberry Pi

Display HAT Mini is a 2.0โ€ณ IPS LCD display for Raspberry Pi, featuring a 320ร—240 resolution at 18-bit colour with vibrant colours and excellent viewing angles. It includes four tactile buttons and an RGB LED, which you can control via SPI with your Raspberry Pi. If you want to connect I2C breakouts as well, you can easily do so thanks to the QwST (Qwiic / STEMMA QT) connector, making it compatible with Breakout Garden I2C modules.

The Display HAT Mini comes with a pre-soldered female header and is compatible with all Raspberry Pi models with a 40-pin header, provided that the Raspberry Pi itself has the header soldered. This display is about 5 mm larger than a Raspberry Pi Zero, making it ideal for compact projects. Additionally, two spacers are included to help securely mount the HAT Mini to a Pi Zero.

Some example projects you can create with this Display HAT Mini and a Raspberry Pi include:

  • a handy IoT control panel
  • a compact digital photo frame
  • a digital art display or GIF box
  • a desktop display showing news headlines, tweets, or other data from online APIs.
  • The 3:2 screen ratio also makes it suitable for retro gaming projects.

How to Install Display HAT Mini Software

To install the software, simply follow the instructions provided in the Display HAT Mini library (link above). You will find examples on how to use the display, buttons, and LED with Pygame. In the ST7789 Python library, you will find additional examples on how to draw and write on the screen using PIL (Python Imaging Library), including displaying shapes, text, and GIFs.

You can also experiment with the high-level framebuffer driver fbcp-ili9341 for SPI-based LCD displays. The Raspberry Pi OS desktop appears very small on a 2.0โ€ณ screen, but it can still be useful for certain projects, such as a custom retro console.

Notes:

  • Be careful when pressing the buttons, as they are close to the edge of the screen and you might accidentally press the display instead of the button.
  • You can connect Qwiic/STEMMA QT breakouts to the Display HAT Mini using compatible cables such as: JST-SH to alligator clip cable, JST-SH to male Dupont header cable, or JST-SH to JST-SH cable.
If you have a Breakout Garden module without a Qwiic/STEMMA QT connector, you can use a Breakout Extender to connect it to the header on the Display HAT Mini (next to the SD card slot on your Raspberry Pi).
