Can I use it with the Raspberry Pi 3 or Zero?
Yes! It is backwards compatible with USB 2.0 ports (such as on the Raspberry Pi 3A+) and works with the Raspberry Pi Zero using a micro-USB adapter (not included).

Do I absolutely need an external power supply?
No. It’s only necessary if you’re connecting high-power peripherals. For most common accessories, the Raspberry Pi’s power supply is sufficient.
