If you need to read infrared signals from remote controls with variable carrier frequencies – particularly when the exact frequency is unknown – Adafruit’s TSMP96000 “Code Learning” infrared receiver is the ideal solution. This module can detect infrared signals with frequencies between 20 and 60 kHz, allowing you to determine the carrier frequency for further analysis. In RF terms, this is equivalent to a UWB antenna. It is particularly useful for ‘code learning’ applications, enabling your device to be compatible with any infrared remote control.

It’s simple to use: connect the V+ and ground pins to a 3–5V DC power supply, point an infrared remote control with a frequency between 20 and 60 kHz at the sensor, and press a few buttons. The modulated IR signal, including the carrier, is transmitted to the microcontroller via the signal pin, which must then decode it. The board features a green LED indicating correct power supply and a red LED that flashes when it detects infrared signals.

This Infrared Receiver is ideal for advanced IR signal reception projects. However, as it does not provide a demodulated output, it is not compatible with most standard IR decoding firmware; you must therefore ensure that your code is specifically designed for ‘code learning’ applications. The board features mounting holes and a 3-pin STEMMA JST PH connector with a 2 mm pitch. For easy installation in enclosures and devices, you can purchase a 2 mm STEMMA JST PH cable with pin connectors or crocodile clips (not included with this product but available separately) to connect the board without soldering.

Each board is supplied fully assembled and tested, but without a cable included. No soldering is required, although a STEMMA JST PH 3-pin cable with a 2 mm pitch is needed for connection. If you prefer to solder, a 0.1″ pitch header is available for power, ground and signal connections.
