TPL5111 Low-Power Timer Breakout

Turn any type of electronics into low-power electronics using this standalone breakout: the TPL5111 Reset Enable Timer breakout.

Low power consumption is no minor consideration when buying development boards and you need to build a project that runs on battery or solar power.

This Adafruit low-power timer breakout switches your electronics on and off using a built-in timer capable of adjusting the interval from 100 ms up to a maximum of two hours. Periodically, this TPL5111 will set an enable pin to ‘high’ – adjustable via a potentiometer or resistor – thereby enabling power to your project.

As soon as the Low-Power Timer Breakout receives a signal from the project indicating that the project itself can be switched off, the timer will set the enable pin to ‘low’.

How to use the Low-Power Timer Breakout

To use this product, follow these steps:

• Set the desired delay by enabling the potentiometer using the jumper on the back of the board (“trim enable”). The jumper furthest to the left sets a delay of 100 ms, while the one furthest to the right sets a delay of two hours.
• Connect the VDD pin to your project’s 3–5 V power supply.
• Connect your project’s enable pin to the board’s Enable pin.
• Select a signal pin on your project for the Done pin. Ensure that your project’s code/design sets the ‘Done’ pin to ‘high’ when it has completed its task.

According to tests carried out with the Monsoon Power Meter, when the rest of the project is powered down and only the TPL5111 is operating, the current draw is approximately 20 µA.

There is a tactile switch on the board that allows you to switch the device on manually. If you wish, you can also connect a switch to the ‘Delay’ pin.

The TPL5111 Reset Enable Timer breakout kit contains:
