Raspberry Pi 1 Model A+ Board

The Raspberry Pi 1 Model A+ is the second version of the Model A board, designed to be smaller, lighter, and more affordable.

Although it is very similar to the RPI 1 Model A, it is even more similar to the RPI 1 Model B+, because the RPI 1 A+ has the same 40-pin header that provides the extra GPIO pins and also includes an I2C interface.

The main difference with this model is that, while other Raspberry Pi boards feature four USB 2.0 ports, the Raspberry Pi Model 1A+ has only one USB 2.0 port.

Thanks to its compact size and low power consumption, the A+ is ideal for lightweight or remote projects where multiple USB ports are unnecessary

Raspberry Pi 1 A+ Features

  • Processor: Broadcom BCM2835 (ARM11) single-core SoC
  • Memory: 512MB
  • USB: 1 × USB 2.0 port
  • GPIO: 40-pin header
  • HDMI: Rev 1.3 and 1.4
  • Video: MIPI DSI display port, MIPI CSI camera port, 4-pole stereo output and composite video
  • Multimedia: Dual-core VideoCore IV® GPU with OpenGL ES 2.0, OpenVG, and 1080p30 H.264 decode (1Gpixel/s, 1.5Gtexel/s, 24GFLOPs)
  • Storage: microSD card slot for OS and data
  • Power: Micro-USB connector, 5V/2A DC

It uses the Broadcom BCM2835 SoC processor, which is standard on all Raspberry Pi boards. A really interesting feature of this model is that the mounting holes are arranged exactly like those on the Model B+, allowing HAT boards to be securely attached.

On the top side of the Raspberry Pi 1 A+ board, you’ll find the 40-pin GPIO header, the USB port, the micro-USB power connector, the HDMI connector, and the analog audio and video jack. In addition, both the DSI (Display Serial Interface) and the CSI (Camera Serial Interface) are labeled as DISPLAY and CAMERA.

If you flip the board over, you’ll notice that, just like the Model B+, the Model A+ also has a slot for a microSD card.

The RPI 1 A+ does not have an RJ45 internet connection, like the Model A, but it can be connected to a network using a USB WiFi dongle, a USB Ethernet dongle, or an SPI Ethernet board such as the ENC28J60.

You will need a USB hub to connect your keyboard and mouse in order to set up this development board and start the network connection.

With only one USB port, the A+ saves both space and power, making it a great choice for energy-efficient embedded applications.
