BME680 Breakout: Air Quality, Temperature, Pressure & Humidity Sensor

The BME680 breakout allows you to measure temperature, pressure, humidity, and indoor air quality. This breakout is compatible with both Raspberry Pi and Arduino.

It provides gas resistance readings which react to changes in volatile organic compounds and can be paired with humidity readings to give a measure of indoor air quality.

Thanks to this sensor, you can monitor different aspects of your indoor environment.

If you want to know whether there’s good enough ventilation in your house or your workplace it is possible to set up a BME680 breakout sensor on a Raspberry Pi Zero W and have it log sensor readings to a file, or stream live data to a web service like adafruit.io or freeboard.io.

The BME680 breakout Kit includes:

  • BME680 breakout
  • 1×5 male header
  • 1×5 female right-angle header

The board has been designed so that it is possible to solder it on the piece of right-angle female header and pop it straight onto the bottom left 5 pins on the Raspberry Pi’s GPIO header (pins 1, 3, 5, 6, 9).

The amount of radiated heat can be reduced by using the right angle header which would place the board away from the Raspberry Pi’s CPU.

Software
Although Bosch provides a C library, you may also want to use a Python library with a quick installer in order to combine your BME680 breakout with other boards, such as a Unicorn pHAT or a Blinkt! to have real time updates.

Raspbian Wheezy is not supported by the Python library.

Notes

  • Results of several tests show that the BME680 breakout sensor needs about 20 minutes of burn-in time and that it takes up to a couple of minutes for the readings to become steady after starting measurements.
  • It is possible to use up to two sensors on the same Raspberry Pi or Arduino thanks to the solder pads (marked ADDR) that can be joined to change the I2C address from the default 0x76 to 0x77.
