Results are variable or non-functional due to SanDisk controller\/firmware behavior. SN350 and SN570 in particular prevented Raspberry Pi 5 from booting in some cases.<\/p>\n<p>Otherwise, most M.2 NVMe SSDs (not SATA!) should work correctly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Getting started<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8211; Video: <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/odG7FbptgWQ\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pimoroni NVMe Base installation on Raspberry Pi 5<\/a><br \/>\nLearn: <a href=\"https:\/\/learn.pimoroni.com\/article\/getting-started-with-nvme-base\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Getting started with NVMe Base for Raspberry Pi 5<\/a> <\/p>\n<p><strong>Firmware<\/strong><br \/>\nTo ensure a smooth start, make sure your Raspberry Pi OS is up to date and your Pi 5 firmware is updated to 2023-12-06 (December 6th 2023) or newer. This ensures full support for Raspberry Pi PCIe features without requiring manual configuration changes.<\/p>\n<p>Raspberry Pi OS updates usually handle this automatically, but you can force it by:<br \/>\n&#8211; Open a terminal (Ctrl-Alt-T)<br \/>\n&#8211; Run <code>sudo raspi-config<\/code> and select \u2018Latest\u2019 under Advanced Options &gt; Bootloader Version<br \/>\n&#8211; Run <code>sudo rpi-eeprom-update<\/code> on the terminal to check the current firmware version<\/p>\n<p><strong>PCIe Gen 3 mode<\/strong><br \/>\nTo enable experimental and unofficial PCIe Gen 3 mode, add the following line to the [all] section at the end of : <code>\/boot\/firmware\/config.txt<\/code> of your Raspberry Pi like this:<\/p>\n<p><code>[all]<br \/>\ndtparam=pciex1_gen=3<\/code><\/p>\n<p>Save and reboot. Your drive is now ready to use!<\/p>\n<p><strong>How to format NVMe and boot from NVMe<\/strong><br \/>\nIf you want to boot from the NVMe drive, follow these additional steps:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Ensure firmware is up to date (as above)<\/li>\n<li>Format the drive using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.raspberrypi.com\/software\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Raspberry Pi Imager<\/a><\/li>\n<li>With NVMe Base installed, boot Raspberry Pi 5 from a microSD card and run Raspberry Pi Imager from the start menu<\/li>\n<li>Open a terminal (Ctrl-Alt-T)<\/li>\n<li>Run: <code>sudo raspi-config<\/code><\/li>\n<li>Select NVMe\/USB boot under <strong>Advanced Options &gt; Boot Order<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Reboot your Raspberry Pi 5<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Notes<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Always power off your Raspberry Pi and disconnect power before installing or removing NVMe Base.<\/li>\n<li>NVMe Base provides a PCIe x1 connection intended for SSD use only.
