VL53L1X Time of Flight (ToF) Sensor Breakout
The VL53L1X Time of Flight (ToF) Sensor Breakout is a distance sensor that uses low powered PEW PEW LASERS. You can easily use it with both: Raspberry Pi and Arduino.
The Time of Flight’s low-power-laser-based sensors offer great accuracy and frequency of sampling. The ToF offers also a considerably wide range of detection, from 4 centimeters to 4 meters. It can be used as a laser tape measure, for presence detection or as a proximity sensor. Its accuracy, range and speed, make it the ideal sensor for collision-avoidance on robots.
The Time of Flight (ToF) Sensor Breakout features are:
- VL53L1X Time of Flight (ToF) sensor (datasheet)
- 4-400cm range (27° field of view)
- Up to 50Hz ranging frequency
- +/- 25mm accuracy (+/- 20mm in the dark)
- I2C interface (address 0x29)
- It is 3.3V or 5V compatible
- Reverse polarity protection
- Compatible with Arduino and all models of Raspberry Pi
- Python library
VL53L1X Time of Flight (ToF) Sensor Breakout set includes:
- VL53L1X breakout
- 1×5 male header
- 1×5 female right-angle header.
This breakout board is designed so that the right-angle female header can be soldered and the breakout can be popped straight onto your Raspberry Pi’s GPIO header, pins 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, that are the bottom left 5 pins.
Software
Access to Time of Flight sensor Python library to facilitate the use of this distance sensor. It provides methods for short range, medium range and long range, besides displaying distances in millimeters. You will find a couple of examples that graph distance sensed and how to set a threshold distance at which events can be triggered.
This software DOES NOT support Raspbian Wheezy.
Note
Time of Flight is compatible with Breakout Garden HAT (I2C) and Garden pHAT.
